Why compost?
- Food waste does NOT turn into soil in landfills. It takes decades to decompose, while polluting the air and water.
- Composting reduces greenhouse gas (methane). Food waste in landfills is the 3rd largest methane producer in the US, which is estimated to have at least 25 times as much global warming potential.
- Landfills are reaching capacity: Food waste accounts for the largest volume in U.S. landfills.
- Traditional recycling needs help. Indiana's 2021 recycling rate was 17%. Less than 9% of all plastic is actually recycled. But composting offers a 100% recycling rate of food waste!
- Compost regenerates soil. Healthy, living soil stores carbon to fight climate change. Compost also improves soil fertility, water retention, plant resilience, and reduces the need for fertilizers.
- If you don't recycle your food waste & compostables, compost can't be made!
